Over the last few months I’ve talked to a few organizations that want their websites updated. Their wish list of features contained items like blogs, paid advertising, a shopping cart and photo galleries. I asked some questions. What are you going to sell? What are you going to advertise? How do these features support your organization’s goals? I didn’t get solid answers. Why? Because the bottom line was that these organizations wanted the features they’d seen on other websites. They were trying to keep up with the Joneses.

It’s great to keep up with the latest trends and new technologies. At the same time, it’s not a good idea to spend money for needless website features. In addition to wasted funds, it can  dilute your website’s primary focus.

How do you tell the difference?

List your organization’s goals. Are you trying to make sales? Is your goal to raise money for a charity or to raise awareness of a medical condition? Make a list of your organization’s top three goals.

Ask yourself how each proposed feature will help you with your goals. Will it make money or save time?  Will it improve customer relationships?  Will it increase your group’s influence?   Will it help with marketing?  If the proposed feature doesn’t help you reach a goal then it’s not for you.

Remember that your website is all about you and your company or organization.  It needs to support your  activities and goals.   This is one case where it really is all about you.  Enjoy it!
