Have you noticed the amount of blog contests out there?  They’re fun to enter and some of them give away great prizes.

Most of the contests I’ve seen select a random winner from the entries.  How do they do that?

Allow me to introduce you to a handy website called Random.org. They’ll pick the random number for you. For example, say you had 500 entries to your blog contest and you wanted to pick two winners.

  1. Go to Random.org and click on “numbers” at the top of the screen.
  2. Tell it you want to generate two numbers between 1 and 500.  Ignore the columns setting.  That’s for folks who want many more numbers. When you’re done you should have something that looks like this:
  3. Click on the “Get Numbers” button and you’ll have your two winners.
In this case the winners would be the people with comments 438 and 75.  How easy is that?
